Chookooloonks (noun): A Trinidadian term of endearment, used especially when addressing a child.

I'm Karen, and this is my site. I'm married to Marcus, and we're parents to Alex. We live in my native country, Trinidad & Tobago.

From a historical prospective, I’ve lived in a small Caribbean fishing village, a small Texas town, a large Texas city, a large Illinois city, a really large English city and a large Caribbean town, not necessarily in that order. I’ve been an environmental engineering intern, a structural engineer, a law intern to a United States federal judge, a litigator, a software contracts lawyer, a chief counsel and a chief of staff, exactly in that order. Now, I'm a wife, mother, writer and photographer – and at the end of it all, it turns out that’s good enough for me.

Chookooloonks: The Journal describes my daily life as an Englameridadian, being married to a Brit, and being the mother of a child so multicultural, she defies categorization. Occasionally, I’ll talk about adoption. Often, I’ll talk about writing and photography. Mostly, I’ll just talk about our lives here in the tropics. In rare instances, I’ll talk politics, religion or rant about some injustice – but you’ll probably have to push me to do it. If you’re interested in my photography portfolio, you can find it here. If you’re interested in some of the things I’ve written other than this blog, you can find that here. And if you’re interested in seeing dirty photos, you can find that elsewhere.

Dude, it’s not that kind of website.

Recently I did a post on Blogging Baby about transracial adoption. You can read the post here. http://www.bloggingbaby.com/2005/12/04/transracial-adoption-is-teaching-cultural-awareness-always/ In it, I describe the racial breakdown of my family, primarily to make a point about how teaching Alex about her biracial heritage is more complicated in our family. I also proudly post a photograph of our family, which clearly shows that Marcus is white, I am black, and Alex is black.

Then last night, I got an e-mail from STACY. The subject line says "You [sic] blogging baby entry," and her e-mail reads, in its entirety, as follows:

I was appalled at the way you try to hide from being black. whats with the "half this, half that, a quarter this, a quarter that"? Do you think when people see you on the street, they think that you are chinese or indian? Just because you live in Trinidad you can fool yourself and fool of them over there, but you are a black woman. Haven't you ever heard of the one drop rule? Maybe you should do some black history studying. I think you are just a little confused. And your dear husband? You say he's English and white? Isn't english white? if not, then what race is white? Let me explain. Anyone from a country on the continent of Europe is white. There's no need to get technical and say oh he's white and english. And the way you plaster his picture all over your blog as if he's the hottest thing since sliced bread?? Huh. If only we all had your eye.
You need to look in the mirror and be proud that you are a black woman and quit trying t o hide from being black. When I see your picture, I see a black woman. And for your daughters sake, dont tell her she is a quarter this, a quarter that, a quater this, and a quarter that. You are in some serious denial. Is it because your husband is white? Im sorry, but the only one you are fooling is yourself. Enough with the trans racial crap. Learn to appreciate who you are and quit trying to hide from being black, because thats who you are, You might think you are better, because you live over there with a white man, but you're not. You are a black woman with a nappy afro. And that is not meant to be derogotory. It's the truth. embrace it.

I've chosen not to e-mail STACY back -- I mean, why should I defend myself? Anyone who has met me (or has read this blog) knows me better than that. (And honestly, if I were trying to hide the fact that I am black, I'm thinkin' that the way I plaster my face all over this website would be a pretty piss-poor way of doing it.) I'm just stunned that STACY took time out of her busy day to spew such vitriol.

Anyway, because I didn't e-mail STACY back, I have no idea whether STACY's e-mail address is valid or not. I'm tempted to post it here and give it to you to try it out, but this is me, rising above. Take a picture -- 'cause it's a struggle.

However, just because I'm not e-mailing STACY back, doesn't mean you guys shouldn't have a crack at her. Anything you'd like to say to ol' STACY?

(And using all the words that I can no longer say around Alex is not only permissible, it's damn well ENCOURAGED.)
