Hi All-
No doubt, some of you have heard about the young man from the Sudan, adopted by US (white) parents, who held the Olympic flag through the ceremonies. His house is a few miles from mine, my sons have "run agaginst him" in track... and his brothers all the following years... What a truly great bunch of young men. Not because they're great athletes. Not just because they take the ideals of patriotism and love of America to a level which makes me re-realize my own love of country...
But because these young men, whom I know from T&F, with whom my own sons have raced agaist and have shared their lives and stories--They have overcome intense and amazing life barriers, dealt with racism at it's nastiest, maintained, and carried on. Lopez and his brothers (not just his adopted brothers, but many of the Lost Boys who are through out Syracuse) have maintained some of the most amazing composure I have ever seen under intense conditions.
We live in a place, near Tully NY, where Conferate flags DO FLY (there are 5 now, within a 20 mile area). The "N Word" is the norm at the local filling station. The Lost Boys have been harrassed and followed by police, asked questions which, with limited English (at the time) and limited knowledge of the US Justice system tells me they were abused-- and these guys STILL "beleive." They are good, good men, in a world which is not so good.
But this is what you can appreciate, when you ran, as a child, to esacpe death.
Pleas eread the full story....
