Hello. This is likely to be one of my only post because I have an inability to speak beyond my own personal experience. Additionally, I am neither in the U.S. nor an American.

I am of a very mixed background, but chose to define myself as black (and this within the concept of black African, based on my choices of political ideals, political interests, social interests, taste, upbringing, etc.). I recently told someone that I think it's likely that I feel so particularly strongly on the subject because I felt for a long time that people denied me the right to refer to myself as such (I've even been told I was obviously lying about my origins). Now I just don't care.

This said, I recently was additionally reminded of the importance of tolerance - and respect - for how others define themselves when someone else, who happens to be mixed, said she didn't refer to herself as black. A while back, I would have started an argument based on that statement... Embarassed But if it's my right to define myself as I wish, it certainly should be the same for others... (it takes a while to sink in, but I think it's in now).

I found this site by accident, but have found it very enriching, both for the scholarly approach (and therefore, the fact that most try to remain civil and openly discuss various difficult subjects) and for the variety of subjects approached (I may no longer live in the U.S. but several things speak to me on an international level - colorism for example).

It is very interesting to read, whether I agree with most points or not.

Okay you now have access to all but the women-only forums. MixedMom will probably see this note shortly and authorize you into her forums. If not, just send her a private message. If you cannot reach her by tomorrow, let me know and I shall take care of it.

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum. I found this place on a search trying to find topics on racial history and conflict in america for a research paper I'm doing. I like the atmosphere here and the exchanges, kudos for a place like this.

I'm also of mixed race descent so all the stuff here is my cup of tea. At first I was confused on how to post but thanks to other I think I've figured it out (thanks again).

Oh and..I hail from NYC..big baseball/mets fan junkie here. Anyone else?
