Brendan Koerner, Now the Hell Will Start: One Soldier's Flight from the Greatest Manhunt of World War II

Brendan Koerner recounts the life of Herman Perry, an African-American GI that was sent to South Asia in 1943 as one of many African-American soldiers assigned to build the Ledo Road. Mr. Koerner relays that following poor treatment by white officers and the physical toll of working in the jungle, Mr. Perry fled his battalion. Mr. Perry was tracked for several months and Mr. Koerner follows his path into the Indo-Burmese jungle where Mr. Perry befriended a local tribe and sebsequently married the chief's daughter. This event was hosted by Hue-Man Bookstore in New York City.
