First of I'm not on anybody's side here, but I believe that Mr.Miller in my opinion has highlighted something that has the potential to cause further clashes in this forum and in others , i.e. the different views of Race, Ethnicity, and Nationality by U.S and and non U.S peoples.
We all came to educate and become educated - so I say bring it.
LOL Mr.Miller , i hope that you don't think that was a dig at you, in fact far from it.
I think what you said here "As someone whose nationality/country of origin is not the US (Barbados, in your case), you have the luxury of believing that."

Is Interesting because for peoples who don't live in the U.S. won't understand how race and ethnicity affects U.S society and we all tend to (Americans and non Americans ) to view each other through our own frame of reference.
We have seen this all before in this forum, arguments born out of " Who is black and not black discussions ", that's why i think that is important for Non U.S. people to also understand their American counterparts views, to avoid confusion and unecessary arguments.

Creoles have been around, what, 300 years? Yugoslavia was formed at around World War I. Even if the mixture was recent, it is impossible for one to be "part Yugoslavian," because Yugoslavia was never a nation-state. You could only be Yugoslavian by citizenship, not ethnicity. You could, however, be Macedonian, Serbian, etc by ethnicity. Claiming to be "part Yugoslavian" is like claiming to be "part Soviet," when you're either Russian, Kazakh, etc.
Absolutely correct. Yugoslavia was a failed attempt at uniting the southern Slavic peoples after the collapse of Austria-Hungary. In fact, that is what the very word Yugoslavia means: land of the southern Slavs. Croatians, Slovenians, Serbs, Montenegrins, Macedonians, Bosnians, etc. all have their own ethnic identities, and an individual from one of these ethnicities may not feel kinship with the other ethnicities. There were some unassimilated Germans and Turks scattered throughout the various areas as well for centuries. Banat (where my mom, who is ethnically German, was born) is now part of Serbia. It was a part of Yugoslavia when my mom was born, and an autonomous region of Austria-Hungary when my grandmother was born. The name Banat means border province, and it is an area that, when my mom was born, extended from Yugoslavia into Romania and Hungary. In the Yugoslavian area, at that time, there were Serbs, Hungarians, Romanians, Germans, Russians, Turks, Jews, Gypsies, and a few other ethnicities.
Sorry for the digression, but I'm guessing maybe someone will find it interesting. But then again, probably not.
HUH!! What are you guys talking about? Yugoslavia? Where did that come from? I did not want to read ya'll posts past the first three lines or so.
If you want to know what I said and I stand by my posts, then go back and read them.
My reference to Yugoslavia was that the person told me this and in a TEASING way. He was being funny. Teasing. You know know like in ha-ha! Miller, if I should ever come across that person again, I will tell him to call you guys, okay!
Umm, I am Creole/Mullato. I am what I am. I am what I look like and I am what people take me as. Whatever, I do not wear a sign one way or another and I really do not care what people take me as; Black, Spainsh.
I stand by what I said, in my opinion, I think it just not a nice thing to do to honk.
Some of you, I think asked about people saying " Black is beauty" and how do feel about that. Well ,I think the same way about that as honking for Mullat 'as .
I am just a believer for peope trying to unite instead of divide and divide on little dumb things like hair and color.

In reference to "Black is beauty," if they want to say it, fine by me - who am I to get mad or upset? And, as far as I'm concerned, I benefit from it in that I'm even more justified in having a "Honk if you're mulatto" bumper sticker.

Can you do me a favor? Can you go to Black Planet and say that, and provide a link to where you said it? Or do you only say that to those who identify as mulatto or any other mixed-race?
Shouldn't this thread be moved to the "Issues for Biracial Americans" forum? First, it seems to focus on ethnic pride (chauvinism?) in mixed-ancestry, a topic that fits the other forum better. Second, it is crawling with moral value judgments, a discursive method disallowed here but allowed there.
I originally thought this was in Issues for Biracial Americans
Maybe it could go there or in Ethnicity in America?
FWSweet ,WHERE ARE YOU!??!?!?!?!? I was just called ingnorant! The Rules, The Rules, that I WAS ALWAYS told to read when I was a new poster... I NEVER insulted anyone here ,but I did say general things when I was a newbie ,and not say ,"in my opinion," which left my post looking like facts.
Now Miller,I did not answer you because I do not come by daily. FWIT ,I am a MULLATO!!! Creole. Mixed w/Black, European Spanish, by way of Spain, French, and Native American. I know I have no Italian, but some do have that and other things. I once heard one Creole Mullato person , teasing saying, Creole/Mullato is mixed with Black, French, Native American, Yogoslavian, Polish, anything goes and who knows what.
I was going to say that nationality is different from ethnicity. anonymouse beat me to it. You do not have a flag, country, etc. for your ethnicity.
That's a hard one in countries where the people don't originate from.
Italian-Americans have Italian pride, bumper stickers & flags. Yet America is their nation of birth. Ethnic origins and heritage is what's being celebrated.
When a Puerto Rican wears the Puerto Rican flag even though born and breed in the US they are celebrating ethnic/national heritage. That's not to cause a dived against Dominicans.
Alarm flags would go up for me with White Pride stickers, I've only seen racists with stuff like that.
But if a person has ethnic heritage stickers or flags or whatever I don't see that as divided. Irish Americans have the flags and 4 leaf clovers and many other things they display to show their ethnic pride.
In bigger cities it's looked for and expected. As well as common place NYC Philly Toronto etc etc
I stand by my post. I just see it as a way to separate. Maybe it is because of people I know, where I grew up, etc.
That could be it, but you may have to view it on an individual basis, because in most cases I believe it's a celebration of difference or heritage.
Maybe I am missing your point. Do you have one? I am not being nasty to by asking what do you think? Why?
