At 25 years of age, isn't she a little old to be anorexic?

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Socialite Nicole Richie, whose rail-thin appearance in recent photos has stoked tabloid speculation of an eating disorder, has checked into a treatment facility to address her inability to gain weight, her publicist said on Thursday.

"She is working with a team of doctors and specialists whose focus is nutrition," spokeswoman Nicole Perna said in a statement. "It is important to Nicole that she achieves this goal in a healthy way as this is not a treatment for an eating disorder."

Richie, the 25-year-old daughter of singer Lionel Richie, has publicly acknowledged her obvious loss of weight in recent months, telling Vanity Fair magazine: "I know I'm too thin right now. ... I'm not happy with the way I look."

And she told People magazine that "stress" over the breakup with her former fianc頨ad briefly affected her eating habits. But she has vehemently denied as "rumor" media reports suggesting she suffered from an eating disorder.

Her admission to the unidentified facility has forced a delay in production of the latest installment of her popular TV reality show, "A Simple Life," producers said.

Postponement of the show came weeks after Richie and her "Simple Life" co-star, hotel heiress Paris Hilton, ended a feud that had kept the two on nonspeaking terms for over a year.

"We wish her a speedy recovery and fully expect the series will resume production at some point, hopefully in the near future," said Chris Alexander, a spokesman for 20th Century Fox Television.

Alexander said the upcoming fifth installment of "A Simple Life," in which the pampered pair will be shown working as camp counselors, had been slated to begin in early November and air sometime in 2007.

The show moved to the E! after ending a three-year run on the Fox broadcast network, where it debuted as a hit in 2003 starring Hilton and Richie mixing with common folk as they worked real jobs in America's heartland.

The show continued into a fourth season even after a highly publicized, but unexplained, rift developed between the two stars.

The show's executive producer, John Murray, has said their reconciliation earlier this month was inspired in part by a mutual dislike of the proposed concept for the show's upcoming fifth season, which originally was to have been shot on a desert island, Alexander said.

News of Richie's decision to seek medical help first surfaced on the cable network that airs her show, E! Entertainment Television, and its Internet outlet, E! Online.

Her team of doctors and nutritionists most likely won't let her near the food that you're suggesting! Laughing

But, if she's not going to eat it, you can send that plate my way.

Karen Carpenter was 32 when she died in 1983. She is one of my favorite singers...what a divine voice that woman had! Smile

Many women have either anorexia, bulimia, or some other eating disorder. People often assume that this affects only young white females from upper-class communities. I know a 56-year-old woman who is anorexic and she is as black as can be.

When you have an eating disorder, esp. a severe one, it isn't that simple to "just eat". A whole host of psychological/emotional issues come into play. I had an ED throughout my adolescence. Most of it stemmed from childhood abuse at the hands of certain people and a vicious rape when I was 12 years old. I had problems seeing myself as a worthwhile person and honestly, I still deal with painful memories. Lots of women and girls with eating disorders were sexually or physically or emotionally abused at some time in their lives. They feel that the only control they have is over how their bodies look. I was constantly told that I was fat by adults growing up and sometimes other children. I was very petite then, but self-conscious about my development. I started my menstrual periods very early and had both boobs and hips. Not big ones, mind you, but noticeable. Looking back, I don't see how a little petite kid who only weighed 90 pounds could be construed as "fat" by anyone. I would eat and then stick pens down my throat to vomit. I did this until I was 17.

Nicole Richie does look very emaciated and I hope all will be well with her soon. I have wondered, tho, if her substance abuse might also contribute to how skinny she is. She once had a heroin addiction...

I think i might need help mentally but i don`t think she needs a cure for thinness she`s ok now,i`m trying to lose abit of weight because i don`t feel 120 pounds even though the scale said so ,my breast are so big. i`m 5''11 so if a short person like Nicole weighs 100 pounds it shoudn`t be a problem but for me i`ll be sick if i lose the 20 pounds my mom already thinks i`m too thin already.I hate it when a lady who works at a store said that i shouldn`t worry about putting more junk food into the cart because she thinks i need to gain more weight i just laugh.

Is Lionel Richie 100% Black? I just wonder because Nicole looks so White. I believe she straightens her hair.
